Andy Pernal, CPA, CA

President & Chief Executive Officer

Andy holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from the University of Manitoba and is a Chartered Professional Accountant with over 20 years of senior financial experience in private and public companies. He started with Strad in 2006 as the Chief Financial Officer until the spring of 2009 when he was promoted to the position of President of Strad Energy Services and became a member of the Strad board. In June 2012, while President, Andy also moved into the role of Chief Executive Officer.

Prior to joining Strad, Andy held senior financial positions for 12 years in the cable television, telecommunications, and television broadcasting industries, including: CFO at Craig Media in Calgary; Vice-President, Finance of MTS Communications in Winnipeg; and CFO of Moffat Communications in Winnipeg. Prior to his experience in the industry, Andy spent 9 years in public accounting primarily with Deloitte & Touche in Winnipeg.

Andy has also been involved with various community and charitable organizations in Calgary and Winnipeg. Currently, Andy is on the board and Finance Chair of Clearwater Academy in Calgary and has spent numerous winters and summers coaching and organizing teams at Trails West Hockey Association, Springbank Hockey Association, and Cal West Little League. In Winnipeg, Andy volunteered for numerous positions in coaching and organizing minor sports as well as board positions with Christ the King School, Western Canada Aviation Museum, and the Cerebral Palsy Association of Manitoba.

Shane Hopkie, BA

Chief Operating Officer

Shane holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Manitoba and has over 20 years experience as a leader in successful organizations. 

Prior to moving into the oil and gas industry, Shane spent 13 years in the consumer packaged goods sector working with Nestle and General Mills. In 2007, he changed industries and joined Strad as the Sales & Marketing Manager before being promoted in 2008 to an ever expanding role in operations as a General Manager. By 2011, he was promoted to Vice President of Drilling Services Canada and then advanced again in 2012 to the Senior Vice President role to oversee Canadian operations.  In 2014, Shane was promoted to Chief Operating Officer. With the pattern of being promoted again and again into higher roles and harder challenges, Shane's determination has achieved exponential growth for every business unit and team he has worked with at Strad.

Shane and his family are active members in their community and volunteer with Inn from the Cold and Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada.

Michael Donovan, CPA, CA

Chief Financial Officer

Michael holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Great Distinction) degree from the University of Saskatchewan and is a Chartered Professional Accountant having earned his Chartered Accountant designation in 2007.

Michael started his career with KPMG working with many energy services clients. After 3 years with KPMG, Michael formally made the leap into the oil and gas services space holding progressively more senior finance and accounting roles with ARCIS Seismic Solutions and Enseco Energy Services Corporation.  In the fall of 2010, Michael joined Strad as Controller and continued to expand his role over the years as Strad became a public entity and the operations grew through Canada and the United States. In 2014, Michael was promoted to Director, Corporate Finance and in early 2016 was promoted again to join the Executive Team as Chief Financial Officer.

Michael is an active member in the community through several youth sports programs. In 2016, he launched with his wife, 100 Kids Who Care Calgary, a charitable donation club for kids.
